Announcing Hack the City – 1 Feb 2014

The next instalment of Hack the City is confirmed.  We’re back at the Showroom Cinema on Sat 1 Feb. Join us from 9:30am for an all-day hack session to create better urban and civic experiences for Sheffield using open data.

Full registration details are on Eventbrite – or grab a ticket below.

The ticket fee contributes towards venue and food throughout the day. If y0u’d like to sponsor Hack the City to help cover event costs, some after-hack networking or contribute to prizes – please do get in touch.

While Hack the City does have some award categories, there are no prescribed data themes for hack projects – any open data that’s out there could be your inspiration. However, there is a particular opportunity for projects that involve either education or environment data.

We’re continuing to support the national Open Data Challenge Series run by the Open Data Institute and Nesta. Their next Challenge Series weekend is 15 Mar, and is set around education. Following that, the Challenge Series looks at environment data.  New sets of data are being released for both of these, and we’ll take a look at some of them at the next Open Data Sheffield meetup.

If you have ideas or existing projects in those areas, Hack the City is the place to test and validate them before you apply to the Challenge Series competition. If successful, you could be up for next-step development prizes of £5k each and a grand prize of up to £50k, along with an opportunity to enter their startup incubator programme which includes access to mentors, finance and office space.
